Sunday Chill: Happy Penguin Day!

Sunday evening is the perfect time to get centered. Whether it’s a long bubble bath or a relaxing DIY project, a weekend relaxation ritual helps you clear your mind and get in a positive mood before the new week really begins. After all, it’s not Monday yet! Check out our recipe for this week’s Sunday chill session, and be sure to tell us about your own.

This Sunday just so happens to be World Penguin Day! Which is perfect, because when it comes to animals, penguins are total mood-boosters. And since watching a nature documentary is one of the absolute best ways to zone out and unwind, tonight we’re obviously reaching for The March of the Penguins. Then again, there are plenty of penguin movies to choose from. Editorial director Ani and I share a serious obsession with Mary Poppins, and that film features some of the coolest penguins in cinema history. (We’re mostly referring to Dick Van Dyke. Swoon.)

If you’re anything like us, relaxation is sometimes easier said than done. Even with a good movie on, it’s all too easy to let your mind wander into tomorrow’s To Do List. Giving your hands a little harmless busy work is a great way to make unwinding easier. That’s why a home manicure and a movie remains the perfect recipe for a girl’s night in. Spa Week intern Leah got us geared up on Monday with her adorable penguin nail art tutorial, so we’ve got this under control! We used Deborah Lippmann nail polishes in black, white and orange, but you do you. Show off your penguin nails at work tomorrow and act really surprised when anyone notices. “Oh, you weren’t celebrating World Penguin Day last night? That’s too bad.”

To round out the evening without losing the black and white theme, show respect for the penguin look with one of the hottest bath and beauty trends: charcoal! Charcoal is a truly amazing natural ingredient that’s been used to cleanse impurities for ages. It’s about time we started incorporating it into our beauty routines. There are so many great charcoal products out now at every price point. If you want to try it for yourself, run to the drugstore and pick up some Yes to Tomatoes Activated Charcoal Bar Soap for about $5. Since you’ll probably be hooked right away (seriously, charcoal!), start planning your next upgrade. We’ve been loving Boscia’s Konjac Cleansing Sponges, and the bamboo charcoal infusion offers the perfect gentle skin detox. Don’t stop there. Brooklyn brand Apotheke’s handmade Activated Charcoal Shampoo is sulfate-free and contains only natural scents. That entire sentence is what my dreams are made of, really.

What are you doing to unwind this Sunday? Tell us in the comments!
